Oral Pain Relievers
The four main OTC options are acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin. Each works differently and has different considerations depending on your health history and other medications.
Topical Pain Relief
Creams, gels, patches, and sprays applied directly to the skin over the painful area. Options include diclofenac (Voltaren), menthol-based products (Biofreeze, Icy Hot), lidocaine patches, and capsaicin creams. Topical treatments are a good option for localized pain with fewer systemic side effects than oral medications.
Lidocaine Patches
OTC lidocaine patches provide targeted numbing for localized pain—commonly used for back pain, arthritis, and post-injury soreness.
TENS Units
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation devices deliver low-level electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals. Widely used for back pain, joint pain, and muscle soreness. Available OTC and eligible under many Medicare Advantage plans.
Hot & Cold Therapy
Reusable hot and cold packs, heating pads, and instant cold packs for muscle soreness, joint pain, and acute injuries. Cold is generally recommended for acute injuries in the first 48 hours; heat works better for chronic muscle tension and stiffness.
Braces & Supports
Knee sleeves, wrist braces, back supports, and compression wraps for pain management during activity and recovery. See the Braces & Supports category for a full selection.
Medicated Patches & Wraps
Adhesive heat patches like ThermaCare that provide continuous low-level heat therapy for several hours—useful for back pain and muscle soreness during daily activity.
Over-the-counter pain relievers, topical treatments, and pain management tools for everyday aches, chronic pain, and recovery—all eligible under Medicare Advantage OTC benefit cards.
