What the Independence Blue Cross OTC catalog covers
IBX’s OTC benefit covers a wide range of everyday health products. Coverage can vary by plan, but typical eligible categories include:
•Pain relief: Aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, topical pain relievers, and heating pads.
•Cold, cough, and allergy: Antihistamines, decongestants, cough syrups, and nasal sprays.
•Digestive health: Antacids, fiber supplements, laxatives, and anti-diarrheal products.
•First aid: Bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, and wound care ointments.
•Vitamins and supplements: Multivitamins, Vitamin D, calcium, and similar supplements. Note: vitamins are considered “dual-purpose” items—you’ll need a physician recommendation to purchase them under your OTC benefit.
•Diabetes care: Blood glucose monitors, test strips, lancets, and glucose control solutions.
•Blood pressure monitoring: Home blood pressure cuffs and monitors.
•Eye, ear, and oral care: Eye drops, reading glasses, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and denture products.
•Incontinence supplies: Protective underwear and pads.
•Personal care: Medicated skin care, foot care products, and sunscreen.
What’s NOT covered
The OTC benefit is for health and wellness products only. These are excluded:
•Prescription drugs
•Cosmetics or beauty products
•Teeth whitening products
•Hair care products
•Weight loss supplements (without a physician recommendation)
•Tobacco or alcohol
•Medicare copays or deductibles
•Items purchased from non-participating retailers
•Purchases made on retailer websites (in-store use only for retail purchases)
